Thanks to the recent hacking at Sony which lead to massive leaks of all kinds, we’ve learned that Marvel wanted Spiderman to play a role in Captain America: Civil War!
Its no secret that Sony has struggled to fully capitalize on the Spiderman franchise, and that Sony Pictures (and every division of Sony except Playstation) is going through some financial hardships. Thanks to some leaked emails, we’ve gained insight on what Sony and Marvel wanted to do with Spiderman.
In an Oct. 30 e-mail, President of Sony Pictures, Doug Belgrad tells Sony’s motion picture chief Amy Pascal about a potential scenario that would see Marvel Studios produce a new trilogy of Spiderman movies while Sony Pictures retains “creative control, marketing and distribution.” In simple terms, Sony would have Marvel Studios (Iron Man, Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier) do the actual movie work of finding producers, writers, actors, etc and make the movie, while Sony maintained oversight, marketing and distribution, which could have been a huge win-win for both parties. Marvel also expressed interest in bringing Spiderman into their shared cinematic universe, specifically having the wall crawler show up in Captain America: Civil War.
Unfortunately, talks fell through, most likely because of money and creative differences, and Spiderman will stay a Sony exclusive. It can be assumed that Sony will move forward with its own Spiderman universe, including an animated movie from Chris Miller and Phil Lord (The Lego Movie), a Sinister Six movie, a rumored Aunt May movie where Aunt May is/was a Cold War spy, and a female centric Spiderman film (Black Cat?). We can confirm that Sony exec’s are planning a Spiderman Summit sometime in January to discuss the webslinger’s film future. I officially submit that they take a break from Peter Parker and give us Miles Morales!
