The Wake #9 picks up roughly three months after the end of #8. I feel this book has been slowly transitioning from horror/sci-fi, to a tale of futuristic adventure. But I guess when your rolling with Mer pirates it’s always an adventure. Anyway, we start off with a short recap of the time we missed by Leeward. She said that they really had a smooth sailing three months with no trouble from The Arm or the Mers. Looks like their 62 days without an accident is coming to an end very soon. The group eventually arrives at the coordinates given to them by Dr. Archer. What do they find. Treasure? A device that will wipe out the mers? Nope….a tomb. But this is not an ordinary tomb. However, we may never know what the tomb is because in comes The Arm and the Governess. Read the rest to see the fate of Leeward and her crew.
The Wake has been a thoroughly entertaining series from beginning to end. Scott Snyder’s writing is truly phenomenal and he knows how to capture ones imagination. Sean Murphy’s art has been equally, if not more impressive this far. He brings out ferociousness in the Mers. However, I personally enjoyed the first arc a tad more just based on the horror feel it brought. I also feel that the Mers were not as horrifying and intimidating in the second arc as they were in the first. In the long run though, The Wake will end up being a classic. The trade papers will read incredibly well. Next month marks the final installment in the series and I don’t think it will disappoint.
