I was very excited for the release of this book. Kyle Higgins is a tremendous writer and really knows Chicago well. His work on Nightwing is what initially drew me to this book. Now, the book itself is what has me hooked. The Chicago Organized Workers League is a super hero labor union set in 1960’s Chicago. So, it starts off introducing us to a few of the C.O.W.L members. Blaze, Reacon, Radia and Arclight. We didn’t really get a great amount of backround on this group of characters besides the dynamic of them working together in battle, and a brief scene in Chief Warners office. The first battle sequence starts with Skylancer being chased by the league through the city. The art in this scene is incredible. We also get a look at a few of the powers of these heroes. From this team (Tactical) the one hero I am interested in is Blaze. His suit is very unique and he was a founding member of C.O.W.L.
After this scene we are introduced to the sort of main character, Geoffrey Warner (Grey Raven). Warner was one of the founding members of C.O.W.L. Next we are introduced to John Pierce, a very thorough, and calculated detective. After him John comes the duo Karl Samoski and Grant Marlow. This team of Pierce, Marlow, and Samoski (Eclipse) are very interesting to me. Just by the last half of the book I’m already hooked on this crew especially Eclipse and Pierce. I feel like Pierce is always a few steps ahead of everyone. We also get incredible insight to Eclipse by not just his crime fighting ability, but his social interaction. Immediately we can tell that this dude is a b.s-er. By the conclusion we also are made aware of a possible affair between Geoffrey Warner and Radia. We can already tell that there’s more to Geoffrey Warner than meets the eye. This series is already shaping up to be incredible. I can’t wait for June 25th when C.O.W.L #2 hits stores.
